Comment by Ron Leland on October 16, 2008 at 9:55am: Hey, I just purchased old growth redwood barrel staves. They come from Zinfandel and Cabernet wine barrels that were made PRE-prohibition, and have recently been dismantled.

The wood comes in 14-foot lengths, and is 2-3/4" thick x 5" wide. One side is heavily stained in wine, the other has the wax and ring markings that held the barrels together. I ran a sample through my planer (which ran thru like butter)... and both sides finish beautifully with Teak Oil.

I plan on making a 12-foot long dining table. I'll keep you posted.

Comment by Ron Leland on March 21, 2008 at 8:06am: The current issue of DWELL mag has a great article on a couple of guy in NY that have been taking scrap wood, re-planing and gluing up into large sheets - then turning that into some really beautiful furniture pieces.
